How do you know if it is more than just a sprain?
The simple answer is, if the xray is normal, showing no fracture, and there is discomfort over the ankle ligaments, then it is a sprain. An MRI is the only way to accurately visualize a sprain, but it is an expensive study and not always needed. A sprain is important! Depending on the severity, some sprains (and some fractures) can be walked on. If pain continues more than a few days, evaluation with a medical professional is necessary.
